Washing basics

Yamatomichi products use a wide range of functional fabrics and materials, including water-repellent, waterproof, and odor-resistant textiles. To ensure these features perform at their best, proper care is essential. Choosing the right washing method for each item and thoroughly removing dirt are key to maintaining the product’s performance over time.

Here, we’ve summarized the basics into three key points.

1. Sort your clothing

Synthetic fibers such as nylon and polyester have different properties from natural fibers like wool, so the appropriate washing method will vary. Washing requirements can also differ depending not only on the material, but also on the color and construction of each item.

The easiest way to understand these differences is by checking the care label. At Yamatomichi, we conduct washing tests on our products and assign care instructions based on real conditions.

Before washing, check the care label and sort your clothing accordingly. This ensures each item is treated in a way that matches its material properties, helping maintain both performance and texture over time.

2. Load, water, and detergent

For effective washing, three things need to be in balance: the amount of clothing, the amount of water, and the amount of detergent. The right balance depends on the type of washing machine you use.

Top-loading machines wash by moving clothes through water, while drum machines wash by lifting clothes and dropping them repeatedly. Because they work differently, the ideal balance is different for each type.

How much clothing to put in
If the machine is too full, the clothes cannot move freely, making it harder for dirt to wash out.

Top-loading machine: fill to about 60–70% of the drum
Drum machine: fill to about 50% of the drum

How much water to use
If there is too little water, dirt cannot be rinsed away properly. Make sure there is enough water for a thorough wash.

Top-loading machine: use the highest water level
Drum machine: use a high water setting or an extra rinse with added water

How much detergent to use
Too little detergent may not fully lift and hold dirt, allowing it to settle back onto the clothes. A good guide is whether enough foam is forming during the wash.

Top-loading machine: use the recommended amount based on the water level
Drum machine: use the recommended amount based on the load size

3. Rinsing cycle matters

Rinsing is a key step in washing. It dilutes and flushes away the dirt that has been lifted and held by the detergent. Most fully automatic washing machines are set to rinse twice, but that may not always be enough.

As a general rule, aim for three rinse cycles, then adjust depending on the item. For example, dark-colored items may be better rinsed twice.
